Putting People in Control of Adaptive Robot Autonomy

Park's InterAI message: robots should adapt as people change, but people should have a say in how that happens.

Assistive robots should change with people, not quietly take over more of their lives. Chorong Park brought that message to the third InterAI Workshop at CHI 2026, sharing her reflection on April 14. [1]

As bodies, abilities, and preferences evolve, Park argued, assistance needs to be adjustable. Her focus was user-controlled personalization: giving people a meaningful role in deciding what a robot does for them and how that support changes. [1]

Predictability matters alongside flexibility. People should be able to anticipate a robot's next action and understand what it expects from them, rather than guess their way through an interaction. [1]

Together, those priorities suggest a different way to think about autonomy: more automation is not automatically better assistance. Park's workshop contribution placed understandable behavior and human choice at the center of the design discussion. [1]
