What Makes a Companion Robot Feel Approachable?

A companion robot's first impression is about more than its features. At ICCR 2025 in Kyoto, Chorong Park explored how pet-like qualities, friendly behavior, and familiar memories could make robots feel more approachable to older adults. [1]

Writing on December 8 about her presentation the day before, Park described an approach that pays attention to the emotional side of interaction. The research asks how a robot might feel less unfamiliar and invite moments of reminiscence. [1][2]

The design challenge is to take those feelings seriously while keeping autonomy and dignity in view. In Park's account, emotional connection is a starting point for co-design and testing, not the end of the research process. [1]

She also invited researchers, care organizations, community groups, and industry to explore future studies together. The next step she outlined was collaborative testing in everyday settings, where promising design ideas can meet people's actual experiences. [1]
