Robot Privacy Research Earns CHI 2026 Honorable Mention
An award-recognized study asks a practical question: what happens when someone's privacy preferences change after the first click?

Research coauthored by Chorong Park has earned a CHI 2026 Honorable Mention for challenging one-time consent in social robots. Park announced the award on March 9 for "Privacy is Not One-Click: Designing Robots That Adapt to Older Adults' Changing Boundaries." [1][2]

The project grew from community-engaged work that began in summer 2024. In two participatory design workshops with older adults in assisted-living settings, the team used interviews, storyboards, and discussion to explore how people experience privacy. [1]
The findings point to privacy as something people negotiate over time and through relationships, rather than settle with a checkbox. That changes the design question: not just how to ask for permission, but how to let someone revisit it. [1][2]

The team proposed privacy profiles, real-time feedback, and data ownership tools as possible responses. Park credited the older adults, community settings, and research team behind the work, emphasizing the listening and iteration that came before the recognition. [1]
